Kidney Treatment Options

U.S. Renal Care offers different kidney care treatment options to fit your needs and lifestyle. Our clinical care teams provide education and support so you receive the best care for you.

Dialysis Center

In-Center Hemodialysis

With In-Center Hemodialysis, you will regularly travel to your dialysis center where a care team of physicians, nurses, dietitians and social workers will deliver your therapy and work with you to ensure your care needs are met. In-Center Hemodialysis uses a machine and an artificial kidney, called a dialyzer or filter. The machine pumps blood through the dialyzer, removing waste and extra fluid.

Is In-Center Hemodialysis right for me?

Your clinical providers will help you determine what treatment option is best for you.

Here are some things to know about In-Center Hemodialysis:
  • Nephrologists and nurses provide care in the dialysis center and monitor your treatment.
  • Treatments are administered in the dialysis center 3-4 times weekly on a fixed schedule.
  • Each dialysis treatment will take about 4 hours.
  • Travel needs to be planned to schedule treatments with the nearest dialysis clinic.
  • State-of-the-art dialysis equipment.
  • You will connect with the dialysis community and get to know fellow patients and kidney care providers.

Home Hemodialysis

Home Hemodialysis is administered by you or a caregiver in the comfort of your home. Home Hemodialysis uses a smaller dialysis machine and an artificial kidney, called a dialyzer or filter. The machine pumps blood through the dialyzer, removing waste and extra fluid.

Is Home Hemodialysis right for me?

Your clinical providers will help you determine what treatment option is best for you.

Here are some things to know about Home Hemodialysis:
  • You administer your dialysis treatment at home and you have more control over your care treatment schedule
  • You may save time by not commuting to and from a dialysis center weekly.
  • You have access to 24-hour physician, nursing and technical support.
  • The dialysis equipment and supplies are stored in your home
  • 4-6 weeks of training classes are required in the dialysis center for you and your partner to learn how to perform your dialysis treatments at home.

Peritoneal Dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is administered at home and uses the lining of your abdomen to filter your blood inside your body. A soft catheter is placed in your abdomen and sends a cleansing solution from a fluid bag into the inner lining of your belly (your peritoneal membrane) where it sits for a few hours, absorbs the waste from your body and then carries it back out.

Your clinical team will help you determine what treatment option is best for you.

Here are some things to know about PD:
  • You administer your dialysis treatment at home and have more control over your care treatment schedule.
  • Treatments are done 4–5 times per day by hand for 30–40 minutes or overnight with a machine while sleeping.
  • Daily dialysis more closely mirrors your natural kidney function.
  • The dialysis catheter is placed in your abdomen or chest.
  • You have access to 24-hour nursing and technical support.
  • Patients attend training classes for 1–2 weeks at your local dialysis center.
